Lt. Howard C. Knotts and Sgt. Lowell Sutherland

Lieutenant Knotts was a flying ace during the war. He was captured by the Germans, and eventually abandoned in "freezing water in the street of a little farming village in Belgium," where a hospitable Belgian farmer saved his life. Sergeant Sutherland was the first of Knox's alumni or students to be wounded in the war, serving at both Chateau Thierry and Verdun. He received an award for regimental bravery and two honor plates.
