Letter from Charles L. Nicholson to Dr. W.E. Simonds

Title

Letter from Charles L. Nicholson to Dr. W.E. Simonds

Description

Charles Nicholson writes to Dr. Simonds that "For some time I have been trying to write you but as you may well imagine, the time of an American soldier is pretty well taken up with his duties. My thoughts have turned to Knox frequently and it has been with considerable pleasure that [] Seibel, Guy Temple and myself have gone over our experiences there in Galesburg, and recalled incidents of our college life." He also expresses hope that Knox's football team had defeated Monmouth during the traditional Thanksgiving game. He also writes of Christmas festivities: "Christmas afternoon all the French children in the vicinity of this camp were invited to a Christmas tree celebration given by a certain organization of Americans. About fifteen hundred youngsters were present and each received a bag of candy and a toy. I believe it did us more good to see the happiness on the faces of those children than anything we have seen since we have been in France. Many of the homes represented were probably comfortable before the war, but now the American tree and Santa Claus furnished the only joy."
