Jared Smith was born sometime in 1897 in Osco, Illinois. He came to Knox with the Class of 1920 in the fall of 1916. A very intelligent student, Smith was among top of his class and he was especially skilled in forensic science. A member of the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity, he was also noted for his talent at writing, and he found a place on the staff of The Knox Student during the 1916-1917 school year.

He was forced to leave Knox in the fall of his sophomore year because of the draft, being stationed at the Great Lakes Naval Training Station. He unfortunately fell victim to the Spanish influenza epidemic soon after the war ended and passed away on December 25, 1918.
