Letter from Robert E. Williams to Dr. W.E. Simonds

Knox College faculty member Robert E. Williams writes to Dr. Simonds: "I felt it coming all the time, the fever to do my part on the world war and I am writing you to say that I am a member of the University of Chicago Ambulance Corps No. 3. I enlisted Tuesday and am to be mustered in next Saturday..... I am sorry not to be able to return for Knox for I grew to be very fond of the school and the people connected with it but I'm doing the most unselfish act of my life right now I think and that is compensation enough for all sacrifices made. I hope that you and the faculty will keep me in mind and if opportunity permits write once in a while to a "rooky" [?] at the war..." He then inquires whether "it would be possible for you people to grant me a year's leave of absence so that if the war should be over next summer I could feel that I had a position awaiting me? If such a thing were possible I should feel much better because I have several debts hanging over me that I was unable to get rid of this year."
